Restaurant-Supermarket deal: fuel discounts for diners

[by Ahmed Ahmed]

Going out for dinner at one of twenty-one restaurant branches could now save you money on fuel, as Morrisons supermarket announces a new deal linking three things most of us can’t do without: grocery shopping, filling up on petrol and enjoying a meal out.

Being chains, the restaurants in question are known less for their uniqueness than for their attempts to bring continental cuisine to the British high street at prices undercutting gourmet venues.

Bella Italia, Zizzi and Pizza Express need no introduction as purveyors of Italian fare, which is a perennially popular choice among UK diners.

And according to a Dine Birmingham survey in February 2012, Brummies are no exception. Over 20% of respondents indicated Italian as their favourite pick for a romantic meal.

French cuisine came in third with 14% of the vote. The Birmingham and Solihull area alone is home to six branches of Café Rouge, also a part of the Morrisons Fuel Saver scheme. The venue touts ‘classic French dishes with a contemporary twist.’

Morrisons itself cultivates a reputation for quality food by emphasising the importance of fresh local produce. The supermarket stocks 100% British beef, lamb, pork and poultry, employing more butchers, bakers and fishmongers than any other UK retailer.

While food lovers tend to agree on the virtues of buying local, not many topics divide them more than the issue of chain restaurants. Although there are some who avoid them altogether in favour of independents, others are much more open to dining on the culinary high street.

Whichever camp you fall into, the Fuel Saver widget (below) is designed to help you decide whether it’s worth your while or not. Simply slide the dials to work out how much petrol money you could save.

To take advantage of the Morrisons Fuel Saver scheme, you need to use the vouchers on sale in Morrisons stores. These can be spent not only when dining out, but also on a variety of fashion, beauty, home, leisure and entertainment brands.
