Paul Hollywood: Our chat with the ‘Bread’ TV chef

Great British Bake Off judge Paul Hollywood revealed his new solo TV plans in an interview at the Birmingham NEC…

This year’s Great British Bake Off may be ending this week, but we won’t be mourning Paul Hollywood’s absence from our screens for long. The 44-year-old star has been given his own BBC show, ‘Bread’.

Paul will be presenting Bread, a six-part series in which he’ll be travelling across the country looking at the history and regional differences of baking. It was clear when I met Paul for our exclusive chat, that he is relishing the opportunity to break away from the confines of the Somerset marquee that has been his TV home for the past three years.

Great British Bake Off success

Thanks to Paul and Bake Off co-judge Mary Berry, the nation has fallen in love with the joys of baking the perfect Victoria Sponge.

“If Mary and I have inspired people to start baking then I’ve done my job.” he says.

And Paul certainly takes his job as a judge very seriously - he’s faced criticism himself for not treating the contestants as amateur bakers.

Paul disagrees with this view: “They’re not just amateurs - they’re the best amateurs in the country!

However, he tries to keep back the criticism when he’s off the clock and dining out:

“I try not to judge when I’m away from the show - I just want to eat! But if someone asks for my opinion, then I’m going to give it. I can’t hold back at all.”

Upcoming appearances

As well as appearing at the Motorhome and Caravan Show at Birmingham’s NEC (17th October) Paul will be in action at The Good Food Show, also at the NEC, next month. Paul will also be reuniting with Mary Berry for a special Christmas edition of Great British Bake Off.

“We’ll be showing viewers how to bake mince pies, puddings, cakes and all the festive treats.”

Sounds like the icing on our Christmas viewing!
