bodega restaurant review | birmingham | latino

Few Brits tend to go in for El Cinco de Mayo, unlike the Americans, who cheerfully join in with their Mexican neighbours’ fiesta every year on the 5th of May. Unwilling to miss the party, however, I dragged a friend along to Bodega, which describes itself as ‘a contemporary cantina bringing fresh South American inspired cuisine to Birmingham city centre.’

location
Near the bottom of Bennett’s Hill, Bodega is located just off the beaten track that is New Street. Click here for Google map.
atmosphere
What strikes you first about the restaurant is the decor. Bright blue walls, funky paintings, and colourful metal chairs bring something of the artist’s studio to the interior. The clientele of mostly young adults and the lively latin background music complete the decidedly cool ambience.
food
The menu boasts a range of South American delights, from the staple nachos to more unusual offerings, like the moqueca de peixe, a deliciously creamy and flavoursome Brazilian fish stew, which arrived in a terracotta pot complete with a lid and accompanying bread. For chip lovers, the batatas fritas are a healthy and tasty sweet potato alternative. Although the dessert menu is almost as diverse as the main, only one choice seemed right on this Mexican fiesta day: churros. The moreish fried batter strips come dusted with cinnamon, accompanied by a pot of thick chocolate, and decorated with an assortment of summer berries.
drink
Bodega prides itself on its array of cocktails, serving up Latin classics like daiquiris and margaritas, alongside a list of specials. One such is the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a heady and seductive mix featuring tequila and blackberry liqueur.
service
The service was pleasant and prompt at both the bar and the table – thankfully, no waiting around for food or drinks.
verdict
A relaxed and inviting atmosphere where you can enjoy great Latin food and friendly service.
